Compliance to Competitive Advantage: Navigating Decarbonization for the Philippine Mining Sector
- Date May 22, 2026
- Time 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
- Venue Acceler8, Legaspi Village, Makati City
The global transition to a low-carbon economy presents a fundamental decarbonization crossroad: the very minerals required for green technologies (e.g., Gold, Copper, Nickel, Iron, and Aggregates) are currently produced through energy-intensive processes. Mineral extraction, including these essential ores, accounts for up to eight percent of global carbon emissions, of which 70 to 90 percent come from value chain (Scope 3) emissions, according to CDP.
For the Philippines, the primary challenge is avoiding “Environmental Burden Shifting,” where emissions saved by green technologies elsewhere are shifted back to the Philippine landscape during extraction and processing.
Workshop Rationale
Beyond compliance, decarbonization offers concrete enterprise-wide value. Mining companies that proactively measure, track, and reduce emissions are better positioned to respond to emerging policy directions, such as potential carbon pricing and emissions caps; maintain strategic flexibility amid regulatory shifts; and reduce greenwashing risks through disclosures supported by credible, mapped, and calculated data with clear methodologies.
Scope of the Workshop
This technical alignment dialogue was designed specifically for key decision-makers within publicly listed mining companies (Gold, Copper, Nickel, and Aggregates). It focused on the transition from introductory concepts of IFRS S1/S2 to the operational challenges of measuring, tracking, and reducing carbon emissions across the mining value chain.
Objectives
The workshop aimed to:
- Clarify the exact data points and governance structures required for successful PFRS S2 filing, aligned with existing national regulations and international frameworks.
- Develop strategies for accurate, reliable supply-chain-related inventory tracking to meet SEC and international investor expectations, with particular attention to Scope 3 emissions from downstream processing of sold minerals.
- Explore how Artificial Intelligence and material substitution could accelerate decarbonization affordably and effectively.
- Align carbon-reduction data with banking expectations to lower the cost of capital and secure transition finance.
- Introduce NRI’s six-step emissions management roadmap, from baseline establishment and consistent tracking to target setting.
